This new specialty is available online and evenings for working adults through University College, the college of professional and continuing studies.

The availability of resources is the backbone of the world economy and centuries-old ways of life. The sustainable utilization of these resources is directly linked to the welfare of human life on this planet. Much of the current energy production, which supports daily life in developed, developing, and underdeveloped nations, is generated from the consumption of fossil fuels. These fuels are diminishing in quantity and in some areas damaging the environment and adding to conflict between and within societies. Sustainable systems must be considered and developed in the areas of growth, transportation, energy, policy, and business models in order to head off looming environmental, political, and humanitarian problems. This will be accomplished through a comprehensive study of sustainability in the areas of economic development, green building, land use, transportation, and water resources.

The Energy and Sustainability specialty is just one facet of the Master’s Program in Environmental Policy and Management which also includes concentrations and certificates of advanced study in Environmental Policy; Environmental Management; Environmental Health and Safety; Natural Resource Management; and Environmental Assessment of Nuclear Power. A University College master’s degree can be earned in less than two years by completing 48 credit hours. Graduate certificates allow professionals to add a powerful skill set to their capabilities in one year by completing 24 credit hours. Credits earned as part of a graduate certificate can be applied toward the completion of a University College master’s degree.

“At the University of Denver, we have a long tradition of offering applied graduate education that is current and reflects industry changes and challenges,” notes Dr. John Hill, Academic Director of the Environmental Policy and Management Program at University College. “With all the changes we are experiencing in energy usage and policy and the impact of emerging and developing economies, we feel this specialty will provide the necessary background and applications to address upcoming energy challenges. This program also offers a new avenue to increase students educational experiences and offers an advanced degree, which allows students to either ‘go deeper’ into their specific industry or ‘go broader’ in their specific area of practice and expertise and tailor their continuing education to not only their current position, but future positions as well.”

Programs at University College are developed and updated with the input of advisory boards composed of industry leaders and employers. This ensures that students will learn what employers are looking for and gain the most current information with a view to future industry trends connecting them to future success.
